Druid Flight Form FAQ

Q. Is Swift Flight Form free?
A. The spell is. The training is not. More explained below.

Q. What is swift flight?
A. Taken directly from the tooltip: "Shapeshift into swift flight form, increasing movement speed by 280% and allowing you to fly. Cannot use in combat. Can only use this form in Outland or Northrend. The act of shapeshifting frees the caster of Polymorph and Movement Impairing effects."

Q. Is it the same as an epic flying mount?
A. Yes and no. The speed increase is the same. However, it is not a mount that you purchase, rather a spell that goes into your spellbook under the Feral tree.

Q. I am specced balance or resto, will I still have access to swift flight form?
A. Yes, talent points have no bearing on swift flight.

Q. Does it have the same 1.5 second cast time as a regular mount?
A. No, it is instant-cast.

Q. Do I need to pay for artisan riding skill training to learn swift flight?
A. YES. Every class has to pay for artisan riding training if they want artisan flight. This is probably the most often misunderstood aspect of swift flight.

Q. Do I need to pay for the swift flight form skill?
A. If you choose to do the quest chain involving it, no.

Q. What level do I have to be to learn swift flight?
A. 70.

Q. Where do I learn artisan riding skill?
A. Alliance: Honor Hold or Valiance Keep. Horde: Thrallmar or Warsong Hold.

Q. How much does it cost?
A. The base cost is 5000g, same as every other class. Yes, five thousand gold. Read on, there's ways to lower it.

Q. Base cost?
A. Your Stormwind/Orgrimmar reputation is applied to the riding trainers in Hellfire Peninsula. Your Valiance Expedition/Warsong Offensive reputation is applied to the riding trainers in Borean Tundra.

Q. What exactly would be reputation discount be?
A. At Neutral, the cost would be 5000g. Friendly would be 4750g, Honored would be 4500g, Revered would be 4250g, and Exalted would be 4000g. My advice: Since it is far easier to get to exalted with Stormwind/Orgrimmar than it is with Valiance Expedition/Warsong Offensive, grind your Stormwind or Orgrimmar reputation to exalted (starting area quests, runecloth turnins, etc.) and buy your training in Hellfire.

Q. Can you learn swift flight from the druid trainers?
A. Yes you can, at level 71.

Q. So why bother with a quest chain?
A. Several reasons: You get a decent idol that will last you several levels, possibly even until level 80. You don't have to pay for the spell. You get an achievement. You get to learn some things about your class that you may not have realized. You get the chance to loot a mount. And finally, you become able to summon that boss anytime a group wants to try for the mount.

Q. What mount?
A. Reins of the Raven Lord. It drops from the boss you must summon as the final part of the swift flight form quest chain. Note that it is a regular ground mount, not a flying mount.

Q. Can anyone loot that mount, or only druids?
A. Anyone in the party.

Q. I already learned swift flight at 71, can I still do the quest chain?
A. Yes.

Q. Besides artisan flying skill and being level 70, what else do I need?
A. An Auchenai Key, which means you must be at least Honored with Lower City. You need that key because the final part of the quest chain is done inside Heroic Sethekk Halls, and you must have that key to enter the dungeon in heroic.

Q. Can that part of the chain be done in Regular Sethekk Halls?
A. No.

Q. I'm not yet honored with Lower City, how do I increase my reputation with them?
A. You can go on regular Auchenai Crypts and Shadow Labyrinth runs, as well as a small number of quests in Shattrath City and outside Auchidoun.

Q. I have purchased artisan flying, I am level 70+, and I have my Auchenai Key. What is the next step?
A. At this point you should refer to this WoWWiki page. It explains everything you need to do in perfect detail.

Thanks so much for the write-up Rage. I learned a bunch and flew to HH and saved myself a bit of gold. I'm sure I'll have more questions as time goes on and I know now who to bug :O

Another NICE feature of Flight form is that you can do many functions while in the form. Herb gathering is available while in flight form, and so is gathering physical items from quests is possible as well. In addition, there's no danger of you being "knocked off" your mount as there is with flying mounts. Leveling a druid with the cold weather flying feels like cheating in that regard
