Ok,so i like me some Onyxia take down. I have fun killing her and the hide bag that drops. So i try as often as i can to get even a small group going to take here down. However,when i try to find poeple in trade i get constant,ever annoying responses and whipers of people saying " you can solo it" " mages can take her down by themselves". I found this hard to believe until i went on youtube,sure enough there where several videos showing mages soloing Onyxia. I watch the videos over and over and decided last night to try it for myself. After several serious attempts (7 to be precise) i failed each time...
The video's i watch where sped up very fast cause the process seems to take a long time. So i wasn't able to get too much out of it. What i saw was the used frostbolt,ice barrier and Ice armor. Obviously because Onyxia is immuned to fire. I switched to my second spec,which is full frost for every attempt. I used mirror images whenever possible,my water elemental,evocation and potions...even used a flask. Even towards the end i convinced a pally to give me a few buffs to help me. All was in vain. These mages are 80 in tier sets just like me. Watching the videos it looks as though there heath is barely going down,but when i attmept...it drops like a rock.
I don't know what im doing wrong! And its getting frustrating.
Does anybody have any insight into what i am doing wrong? Mages...anybody? Im opened to any information.
Cause frankly it's making me feel like a failure as a mage. Cry

It's not possible. We are too squishy. The videos are probably rigged and they have a healer in the  backround or something and thye just edited that part out.

Yeah I've tried many times and failed even more. They definately did some editing on the video and cut out the part pictues and all that.

It is a good idea to try solo though. if you get it let me know

Yeah, there is no way a mage can solo her.  I tried on my DK tank, and had to have a few heals to finish it.  I don't think even 2 or 3 geared mages could do it.  I have seen a ret and prot pally do it though.

Its an easy solo for any spec paly  :)

It is definitely possible for a mage to do it, you only need to worry about phase 2.  I"m not sure if you can blink out of the fireball range when she shoots one at you or what to do, but if you can manage to get out of phase 2 alive, you'll be all set.  Druids, paladins and shamans can solo her at 70 that I know of.

I call shananagans. Because i honestly don't see it possible for a mage to do it.

.Kal I'm with you. As stated before, NO WAY A MAGE CAN SOLO! Yes others can solo because they are ober... But we mages are better.

Judging from the top Youtube hits, this is NOT done using a pure frost build, and it may not still be possible.  For about two months after the launch of Wrath, there was no cap on the spell power boost from Incanter's Absorption.  A 40 Arc/31 Frost build could use ice barrier, fire ward, and mana shield for a massive spell power boost.  Ice barrier and fire ward scale with spell power.  Soloing Onyxia ensues.   

Anyway, they nerfed it back in January to add a cap of 5% of your HP.  I think that may have killed the strategy, though I wouldn't put any money on that.  Us mages do have high intellect scores, after all. 

(I also recall someone soloed Broodlord in ZG by intentionally aggroing a bunch of trash to hit them and proc Blazing speed, whch they used to kite the boss and the raptor.  Like I said, mages can be clever sometimes.)

That's one of a few i saw. I watched 3 of them.

Watch his mana bar - he's using mana shield and taking a ton of damage to his mana bar when his ice barrier runs out.  He has to use icy veins and/or mirror image to make sure that evocation doesn't get interrupted.  I didn't watch through to the end, but I'm guessing he had to time the evocations during phase 3 to avoid being interrupted by the fear.
