  • Apple IPad...  |  Thursday, January 28, 2010 - 9:53 AM
http://www.apple.com/ipad/

The Apple IPad was all over the news this morning and at a glance I can tell you most people are gone be like .... boo thats all it does? Im keeping my laptop and Iphone...

I think for those out there that don't have an Iphone and maybe have an old laptop that they really don't use for anything but emails and carrying around work, the IPad might be a nice upgrade for them. It definetely won't replace laptops because you can't just install any application on it. My guess is you have to download Apps like the Iphone does.

Well to me it looks like a oversized Ipod touch -bigger screen, weighs more, bigger size costs more, i will pass my ipod touch works perfect for me granted i need to get one with more memory as i cant store all my episodes of Dr Who, Fringe and a few others shows i watch but it works

 As an addendum:

There are 140,000 applications currently available that work on the iPad - all of the existing iPhone and iPod touch apps work.

Additionally, the are tons more applications coming; including iWork which offers Office compatibility for Word (Word Processing + Page Layout), Excel (Spreadsheet) and Powerpoint (presentation). PDF's also work seamlessly.

You can use the built in keyboard or pair it with an external one as well.

It sync's with your Mac or PC, like an iPhone/Touch for Photo's, Music and *Movies* (yipee)

Once of the coolest features is the enormous amount of books that will be available - if you have tried a Kindle for reading you know it has some limitations (Black & White, not-so-bright screen etc). The iPad improves on all of that with a screaming fast A4 processor, huge bright display that's photo-quality color. It's also fully gesture sensitive allowing you to just move your finger on the screen to make things happen

10 hours battery life, 1.5 lbs, .5 inches thick.

We should have our demo unit shortly so I will give you the scoop once I have had some time to work with it.

Yeah, well some of us develop on real computers. ;-P

I kid, I kid... I was actually doing some OSX stuff yesterday.  Nice that a lotta common dev tools are just built in, although I had to track down an OS disc to get Xcode on there.

Still, not sure what kind of niche the iPad is going to fill.  Its lack of multi-tasking makes it less useful than a netbook, and its lack of some kind of removable media (SD card or something) means it'll get cramped for space eventually.  Also, I can't believe there's no regular USB ports on the thing!  And all apps have to come through the Apple App Store?  Kind of a pain.

Ah well.  I shouldn't judge until I've had a chance to play with one.  Also, I shouldn't mock the Guild Leader's choice in technology.
